AnemoCheck amidst COVID-19

Sanguina founders share their experiences with home testing and anemia during the 2020 pandemic.

I recently gave birth to my first child, Collin on March 3rd, 2020. On that day, I tried to deliver naturally for what felt like forever until I was wheeled in for an emergency c-section. Things didn’t go according to plan, but at 4:07PM, Collin was born at a whopping 9 lbs. 8 oz! I was so happy we were okay, but I wasn’t prepared for the anemia that followed. After delivering, my hemoglobin level was 7.8 g/dL. This is extremely low compared to my usual levels of 12.0. By the time I left the hospital, my level had only improved to 8.0 and I was told it would take a couple of months to recover my levels, and if I felt worse to call the doctor. After I got home, I was so worried about my anemia on top of new mom duties, recovering from a c-section AND the COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, I was able to use our AnemoCheck technologies to track and trend my hemoglobin levels over the weeks following and did indeed see my levels improve. The peace of mind knowing that my body was healing as it should was priceless as I eased into being a mom. I remember thinking to myself: My body is getting stronger—I can do this! I’m built for this! On top of that, I was able to get instant, non-invasive app results with AnemoCheck Mobile despite social distancing and the inability to go to my doctor’s office for follow-up screening,
even if I’d wanted to. I’m grateful for what our AnemoCheck testing has been able to give me, and hope you will enjoy using AnemoCheck too.

In good health,

Robert Mannino
Chief Technology Officer

I have beta thalassemia major, a serious genetic blood disorder that caused me to be severely anemic and requires me to receive blood transfusions every three weeks as treatment. As I have grown up with this disease, I have experienced firsthand the impact that improvements in medical device technology can have on the lives of patients. This experience has motivated me to design and develop medical devices that can improve the quality of life of patients like myself. The AnemoCheck products represent the ideal result of this motivation. By measuring hemoglobin levels at home, these products can allow patients like myself to cut down on the number of trips to the hospital they need to make. This is especially important as COVID-19 grips the planet. Overall, I’m proud of our work on AnemoCheck, and I’m excited to be able to share these products with you. I hope they help you as much as they have helped me, and I hope that AnemoCheck spurs the motivation in someone else to continue to improve medical technology to the benefit of all of us.
